NC House overrides Gov. Cooper’s veto over pistol permits The first time a veto has been overridden since 2018

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – – The North Carolina House has overridden Governor Cooper’s decision to veto Senate Bill 41.

It comes after North Carolina’s Republican-controlled Senate voted Tuesday to override the Democratic governor’s first veto of the session on legislation to loosen gun restrictions, teeing up the House’s first test of party unity under new operating rules.

The bill is a resurrected version of a set of gun access regulations which would eliminate a condition that purchasers of handguns get an approval from their local sheriff.

Representative Jon Hardister confirmed the override via tweet and said that it could be the “first veto override since 2018.”

The vote was carried out without discussion.

Senate Bill 41 concerns the requirement for a permit in order to purchase a gun.
